On Page Optimization includes all the SEO techniques that you can use on your own site without the help of other websites to rank well. These On Page SEO techniques apply to all the content of your web pages. There are a number of On Page elements that one can optimize for; but the most important of all is the page title.

The title of your web page is the first most visible element and appears in the <title> tag of the <head> section. Because of its prominence, the title of your web page is the most important on page elements to be optimized. A good SEO title should have the key phrases in appropriate proximity and density. A balance has to be maintained taking the above factors and the title length in consideration. A good page title is also short and catchy.

Importance of Title Tag in SEO:

Used in Results:

When a search engine gives the search engine result pages, they use the title tag of the web page to serve as the link to that particular web page. Your title should make the reader curious enough to want to click on the link. In short, It is the Title of the web page which makes the first impression on the visitor.

Displayed in Browser:

Every browser displays the title of the web page at the top bar of the window. The title tells your visitor in one line what the web page is about and helps in ease of navigation if the browser window has many tabs open at one time.

Google Gives The Title Importance:

Google gives a lot of importance to the title tag in its algorithm. Your keyword ranking can shoot high or go down in Google depending on how smartly you tweak the title of your web page.

Directory Submissions:

Most of the search directories use the title of your web page for listing it in their website and as a link back to the website. These Search directories prefer the business name or services provided as the title of the website.

Title Meta Tag Optimization Tips and tricks:

  • The length of the title tag should never exceed more than 120 characters, though 85 characters is considered a good enough page title length.
  • The W3C guidelines state the ideal length of the title tag should be 64 characters including spaces or less. In order to make their display consistent, search engines as well as browsers truncate their title tags. Google shows 66 Characters (Including Spaces) or the last complete full word for Page Title. According to the Bing Webmaster Blog, Bing shows 65 Characters (Including Spaces) for a Page Title Tag.
  • The page title should be written well, using proper grammar and keywords. It should draw the visitor to click on it. A Title tag should be interesting, thought provoking.
  • Each web page must have a different page title, If there’s one thing Google doesn’t like, it’s the same title, content and description on each web page. Satisfy Google’s thirst for unique page title.
  • Ensure that the page title contains your business name or your services. This helps in branding of your company name.
  • Do not stuff the title tag with repeated keywords as they take the meaning out of it; remember, you are catering to humans first and that no visitor will click on a meaningless page.
  • Use the keywords of the title in Meta keywords and Meta description tag. This maintains uniformity of information to search engines.
